火箭殘骸在月球上撞擊出約20公尺寬的小隕石坑，並產生塵埃。科學家目前仍找不到這巨大太空垃圾的確切來源。

馬斯克（Elon Musk）的SpaceX公司最初在1月證實這顆太空垃圾來自他們的火箭，後來又改口說這可能是近10年前發射的中國試驗火箭。中國官方則否認，稱他們的火箭已重新進入地球大氣層並燃燒殆盡。

科學家對這次撞擊很感興趣，並認為不必擔心，因為可能因此能更理解月球部分地質。

環繞地球的軌道上有超過3萬塊大於10公分的太空垃圾，如果漂浮在周圍所有微小碎片都算在內，這個數字會達到數百萬。大多數物體對地球的威脅很小，因為它們進入大氣層後大多會燃燒並消失。
